Homeschooling - Preschool on up - Animal Circle Time

Ok so first, the homeschool day starts out for us with "circle time" this is a term that is used widely in preschools and kindergarten.. I have been calling mine circle time for years and my kids are way above preschool. I just decided a few days ago to start calling mine "mom school" which is a Thomas Jefferson Eduction term. (TJE is the biggest homeschool philosophy among Utah LDS, it has lots of good ideas, and I use many of them). I also mix my morning devotional in with my circle time/ mom school time.

Circle Time - Circle time is together/ learning/ fun time, with some foundational drilling (like spelling and math) mixed in. It is called this because normally the class of kids sit in one big circle on the floor around the teacher. Sitting on the floor is good for this because it puts you at their level and in a less formal setting. In circle time you introduce new ideas, review old ideas and drill the foundational ideas. So here are some ideas on how to do a animal circle time.

Step one - Do not get over whelmed at the volume of the information available.

Step two - Do what is fun and you enjoy. Adapt all this to your interests and needs.

Step three - Let your daughters mood be a guide for how much schooling you do. If she is board with an activity, change activities. If she is done with school save the material for the next day.

Step four - circle time is normally something that becomes habitual. After a while you will develop a rhythm and do the same things each day in the same order mostly. But circle time is not rigid and it does change and adapt over time and with the daily needs. Pick the activities you would like to repeat and have some fun.

Step five - keep things interesting by having your circle time activities mixed, do not do all the flash cards together, mix them with the singing and other things so your child does not get burnt out on them. Changing the type of activity helps your child stay attentive

Step six - End circle time with some form of active play

Step six - pick one to two table activities to do at the table.

Step seven - show your child one of the fun games or animal activities for the day and send them off to play with it.

Step eight - smile, pat yourself on the back, you just finished today's school. But you may say it was so short and so quick? Hey your teacher to student ratio is 1 to 1, that is a heck of allot better then 30 to 1, everything will go faster and work better because of that. Don't under estimate the value of it based on how quick it is... You have covered many important things in a short time.

Step nine - your child is learning a whole world of wonderful things just by being home with you. Things that can not be duplicated in the sterile environment of the public school. When days go by that you don't do school, don't stress, your child learns naturally all the time. John Holt in "How children learn can teach you all about that."

Zoo Animal Circle Time

Animal flash cards - buy a box of animal flash cards which are easily found in dollar stores or online. Each day pick one animal, read the back of the card and talk about the animal, teaching about it. Add this animal to your animals learned stack. For review you can flash the stack of animals that you have learned and have your child either tell you the animal's name or something they have learned about the animal (depending of learning level). I suggest to only use 5-6 animals in your review stack and retire the older ones so the animal review does not get too long.

Preschool nursery rhymes - nursery rhymes are wonderful for the young learning child. I forget all the reasons but there are actually full studies done about how they help. They help with information retention, memorization, fine motor skills, poetry and more... Not to mention that they are part of our culture, so it is cultural education. Here you can have fun singing all the wonderful animal songs.. Old Mcdonald Had a Farm (you can theme this out, by using jungle animals when you are teaching that theme).

Story time - With story time your child can learn a little bit more about the animal in the story. They can gain a further appreciation of reading. They can learn the skill of story retelling and they can do story sequencing. It is fun while on the floor together to read or retell stories. If you have a print out of the characters you can put the card stock print out on popsicle sticks or paint sticks and use them to act out the story.

Letter and number of the day - learn a letter and number of the day.. use some of the fun printables durring table time to color or make. make flash cards with markers and 3x5 cards and flash them to your child like you flash the animals. Sometimes it helps a child pay attention to flash card time if you say the different words on the flash cards in different funny voices. Talk like a lion or a mouse or a monster or a fish or an alien or something else funny. Teach the letter sounds as you teach the letter. You can pick one of the alphabet animal printables below and teach the animal on the letter for that days animal flash card.

Weather and calander of the day.- Start the day off by asking what is the weather like outside or what day is it. Find some visual aids or printables that show days of the week or months of the year or weather symbols to help you talk about these things.

Pretend play - This is a fun time to play pretend that you are the animal of the day. What do you run like, what do you eat, how do you sleep, do you play? Nothing like crawling around on the floor rawrring like a lion with your child for a good start to the day. Also this is a good end to circle time. It helps the little ones who don't want to sit for too long get the blood pumping again and ready to move onto something fun. History - Rotate through the four main history focuses, once topic a day, four times in a week. Each focus topic/ time frame/ place could be studied anywhere from four days to four weeks depending on the level of interest, importance, and materials.

Overview of the Topic - Geography, Religion, Architecture, Trading, Allies, and Wars.
Accomplishments of the Area - Technology, Science, Mathematics. Education, Laws, Daily Work.
Creations of the People - Literature, Art, Music, Pottery, Jewelry, Clothing, Food.
Significance of the Time - Historic Significance, Our World View.

Flashcards and Worksheets - We will use flash cards and worksheets to drill and review some of the foundational concepts of learning. Mostly this will be done in spelling and math. We do several things to make flash cards more fun. When flashing them we say the words in funny sounding voices. We sound like a lion or a mouse or an alien or something fun while we say the flash cards. The kids like to flash the cards to each other. For reading and spelling my younger kids read the words and the older kids spell it back to the younger kids, who makes sure it is correct. Racing through the cards to see how fast you can possibly get through them also keeps them involved.

Learning Stations - Learning Stations will be used to create Multi Sensory fun learning play that helps children master the three R's, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.

Rotating Learning Activities

We will rotate through these learning activities, doing one a day. In this way we can cover a wide range of learning topics a little bit at a time.

Science Webquests - The kids will be challenged to one webquest a week. Most of the webquests will have a Natural Science focus. The science topics will be divided into the seven days of creation, with a focus of learning to be creators, and creating things with our knowledge. Also we will have a web questions jar that the kids can chose questions from to do their own webquests through out the week in order to inspire more learning based screen time.

Nature/ Art/ Everything Journals - We will be making our own nature journal books, that I hope to blog about, so they can be as flexible as possible. The nature journals will also be art journals and education journals, and writing practice. We will use this format this year instead of the homeschool note books we have done in the past. The kids will be encouraged to journal three to four times a week. Nature Journaling is a great Saturday and Sunday activity because it is quite, connected to God's world, and requires low parental involvement.

Homesteading Skills - Once a week we will work on our homesteading skills and process Gods blessings into useful things like soap, bread, and yogurt. The children will be invited into these homesteading moments inorder to pass the skills down to the next generation.

Try Its - Try its is a Girl Scouts term. I am using it here because it seems to best title this area of learning. During try it time we will do active applications of our learning. This will be done through field trips, projects and ethnic food.

Active Play

Active Play happens everyday. The majority of the child's lives should be in active play mode. With a focus on Charlotte Mason approach of, the child left alone will naturally grow and learn. At the end of structured learning I will many times introduce an active play game or idea. Then I will let the kids go off to play and see what comes of it. The kids will be left to play until Family Evening Time.

Family Evening Time

Evenings are for families. This is when strong family bonds are created, and wonderful together time is available. In our evenings we will cook together, eat together, clean together, read together, pray together, and then head off to sleep.

Homemaking - The kids will each take turns helping get dinner ready. During this time they will learn valuable homemaking skills in a one on one setting.

Family Reading Time - Family reading will begin with family scripture reading, what a wonderful way to use this great book to teach our world view to our children and raise up children unto the Lord. Afterwards we will read in the family classic of choice.

Family Prayer - Family prayer is a bonding opportunity to come together in love for each other, to be close, to think of others needs, and to count our blessings. What a great end to a wonderful day, a gift from the Lord.

Scriptorial History and Classical Literature

Over a hundred years ago the Bible was considered real history by Christians. It was taught to their children as the foundation for truth. Today as I persue Scriptorial History it can feel like I am discovering new things, until I come across old Christian novels and I am reminded that there is not much new under the sun. Today Christian and Biblical beliefs are being challenged from many sides. Most noteably the public school system professes to teach a "nutural" curriculim all the while teaching concepts that challenge biblical thought. To combat these challenges many of us turn back to our roots, the scriptures and classical literature. As we study classical literature we learn again that... the more things change the more they stay the same.

Book Review: After the Flood by Bill Cooper

Throughout history knowledge of God has been challenged and these challenges have been overcome by believers. The book After the Flood by Bill Cooper sheds some wonderful light on the theological attacks and advancements among early pegans. In the Introduction - In the Beginning Bill Coper talks about his questions about the Bible and how he resolved them.

On the one hand I had the Bible itself claiming to be the very Word of God, and on the other I was presented with numerous commentaries that spoke with one voice in telling me that the Bible was nothing of the kind. It was merely a hotch-potch collection of middle- eastern myths and fables that sought to explain the world in primitive terms, whose parts had been patched together by a series of later editors.

In Chapter 1 The Knowledge of God amongst the early Pagans Bill Cooper examins the early Pagans beliefs in God. The most interesting thing learned in this chapter is that the arguments of today have been used against belivers of God in the past.

Popular thought seems never to have considered the possibility that pagan man was indeed aware of God and of His attributes and power, and that this awareness had existed and flourished for centuries without any recourse at all to the scriptures. So it is with something of a surprise that we meet with exactly that, a profound knowledge and appreciation of an eternal and almighty Creator God, His fatherhood of the human race and His infinite attributes in the writings of various historians in the ancient world and amongst the teachings of the earliest philosophers.

So profound was the concept and knowledge of God amongst certain pagan peoples in the ancient world, and in particular the Greek and Roman worlds, that a controversy eventually arose and was to rage for many centuries between those who propagated and preserved that knowledge of God as the Creator, and those who sought to destroy it by attributing the creation of the universe to purely natural forces. The marked similarity between that pagan controversy and the controversy that rages today between creationists and evolutionists is surprising...

Here is an example of similar arguments between creationiss and evolutionists from Bill Cooper.

Plato's model was of a higher concept altogether. For him, the Creator turned chaos into order simply because it was His good nature, and His good pleasure, so to do. He loved order rather than chaos, and to ensure the maintenance of that order everything He created was made according to an eternal and flawless pattern, Plato's justly famous Theory of Forms.

Epicurus argued that it was insufficient to contend for the divine creation of the universe, as Plato did, from the assumption of a well-ordered cosmos, simply because the cosmos, in Epicurus' eyes, was not well-ordered. (16) It had culminated from a long, perhaps infinite, series of accidents resulting from the random jostling of atoms.

Thankfully I was learning about ancient history at this time in school. It fascinated me, I loved learning what ancient cultures were like. I started to realise a pattern. Every ancient culture we learned about believed in the existence of a God or Gods. In fact I could not find any society that ever existed where the culture of people did not have some sort of belief in a Deity. I concluded that the belief in God or Gods is ingrained in us, something we know, lets say instinctively.

This is just the same conclusion that Bill Cooper comes to

the knowledge of God is in fact and indeed innate within the human soul. It is a built-in awareness that may well be awakened and perfected with the reception of God's Word, but it is certainly something that exists quite independently of a knowledge of scripture.

In this chapter Bill points out this pattern, as the Pagan belief in the one true God is challenged the believers have to adapt and overcome the challenge. As the believers adapt they learn even more fundamental truths about God.

Is there a God?

I remember when I was a young teenager and I started to question religion. Was the LDS church real, were the scriptures true, did God even exist? As young as I was at the time I must have been somewhat analytical. I remember thinking that if I was going to question one thing, I might as well question the very foundation of religion, did God exist, and get it all over with.

I started my questioning with going to my Dad. I told him of my doubts and questions, I was full of fear of what I would learn or discover from asking these questions. I was afraid that my whole world would be turned upside down. My dad was confident and calm. He told me that he too asked these questions, that he received an answer that the LDS church was true and he felt confident that if I was diligent in my search for truth that I would learn the LDS church was true. Just as he had learned the same thing. Whew... It seemed as though he knew the perfect thing to say at the right time.

I boldly jumped into reading about Zen Buddhism. Zen was getting allot of press and I was pretty sure I would find the answers I was looking for there. Where else does one look for answers on Zen but Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy? It was totally over my early teen mind, I was confused, and any deeper religious meanings were lost on me.

I started to ask myself, what would the world be like if there was no God? Now that question did send me into a tail spin. I swam around in the muck of trying to imagine such things for a while. One thing I knew for sure was I did not like the idea of there being no God. But that was not good enough, I needed something more tangible, some sort of evidence, or logic in order to believe there was a God... Or at least I thought I did.

Thankfully I was learning about ancient history at this time in school. It fascinated me, I loved learning what ancient cultures were like. I started to realise a pattern. Every ancient culture we learned about believed in the existence of a God or Gods. In fact I could not find any society that ever existed where the culture of people did not have some sort of belief in a Deity. I concluded that the belief in God or Gods is ingrained in us, something we know, lets say instinctively. From this first discovery of truth I slowly built back up my foundation on religion. I progressed to is there one God or multiple Gods, was Jesus a God or just a good preacher, was Joseph Smith a prophet or a liar and was the LDS Church true. Just as my dad predicted, I found myself happily and securely back to where I began, born LDS, raised LDS, and now... shall I say, newly converted LDS.

What history can we learn from myths and legends?

Some time later my family took a vacation to the Grand Canyon. I had money to spend and the gift shop was full of wonderful things to buy. I browsed for a long time and found myself leaning towards the beautiful books. I finally decided on a book set "Keepers of the Earth" and "Keepers of the Animals" these books were full of indian legends. My family was fostering an indian boy at the time and I thought I would enjoy reading the stories to him and teaching him what I learned.

I loved reading the interesting stories. I giggled at the story of the earth resting on the back of a turtle. I decided that in many ways the indian legends were not much different from the Greek Mythology, They both explained the natural world with supernatural stories.

My heart stopped when I turned to a drawing of a young man finding a sacred record buried in the ground. I read on with fervor. What I was reading was a story not unlike the story of Joseph Smith. It was amazing to me to imagine how the truth of Joseph Smiths story was now showing up in fragments in this old legend. Could it be that some of these other legends would have more remnants of truth? I eagerly read through the all stories looking for anything that would fit the scripture stories I knew. I found a story that resembled Jesus Christ, and one that had fragments of the Bibles version of creation. I think I found other looser related stories but it has been many years.

I started to wonder what could be learned form studying other myths and legends. I had developed a theory. I theorised that if I studied ancient myths and legends that I would find many more references to the stories found in scripture. I started to imagine, what I felt would be the best way to learn and teach history. When I closed my eyes I saw a room surrounded with one grand time line on the walls. I imagined in the middle of that room a large table with a map of the world on it. Also around the walls of that room were low bookshelves with books of legends. I figured with these tools one could read legend after legend and start to see patterns in how they lined up in time and location. I decided this was how I wanted to teach my children history.

Can history be the backbone to all education?

Not only did I totally forget this wonderful ideal of education I had came up with but I also forgot that my patriarchal blessing encouraged me to be a teacher, and to teach my children. Years later through God's direction I found myself homeschooling, and loving it. But I could never stick to one curriculum for very long. I was just too creative. I would research the best curriculum, use it eagerly for one month, make tweaks and changes to it for another month and by the third month I was off creating my own curriculum that was inspired but the new ideas I found in the original curriculum. I was eagerly enjoying myself, but I was getting leery of spending money on expensive books that I would eventually put down and not use.

Finally one day I decided that instead of patching together others curriculum's I needed to just admit that I wanted something that was not available, and start creating my own curriculum from scratch, they way I wanted it. That is when I started to piece together all the elements of what I felt would be the perfect curriculum. A pattern started to emerge, I could see the theme of the importance of history running through out all my ideas. I started to ask myself "could all subjects be taught on the back bone of history." I remembered that Oliver Demille recommended just that thing for learning math. Math history naturally progressed from simple concepts to more complex concepts as the concepts build on each other. I took that to be confirmation that you could in fact teach all subjects on the backbone of history.

Imagine my delight as one day I ran across my old books "Keepers of the Animals" and "Keepers of the Earth". These books brought back a flood of memories and my grand early teenage plans on how to teach history to my children. I took this as confirmation that I was on the right path.

Creating a curriculum takes at least twice as long as it does to teach it. It was worth it for me though because suddenly I was eagerly studying history and the bible so that I could know what to teach and how to teach it. Soon life caught up to me though, and I had my baby. I was glad to be teaching homeschool still but had no time for creating curriculum's. Now that I had refined my expectations of a curriculum I started to discover that there were many wonderful resources that I could piece together to help teach history as the back bone to all learning.

Science, writing, math, religion, government, ethics, philosophy, natural science and many others all are recurring themes in history and can be laced together to the backbone of history, one big History Academy. Maybe someday I will realise my ideal of creating a marketable history curriculum. Today I am realising my ideal of teaching history as a backbone to education through piecing together many wonderful resources. Maybe, God willing, I will be able to report on the resources I am using and how it is all cumming together. In the meantime I am grateful for all that I am learning, and that I have the opportunity to share it with my children.

I read somewhere that children learn faster from manipulatives if they are able to have free play with them before using them in math activities. In this way the child learns first what the manipulative is like, then he is ready to apply it towards other concepts. See even the baby is learning the nature of the manipulatives as he sucks on a ten rod.

The kids used the manipulatives to make "Cubical City". Complete with blue buildings, orange lawns, yellow roads and light blue unit people. Each building eventually got a name. Here is our home, there is Papa's work, and the Midwifes office, the store etc.

The math city was so much fun they wanted to play it again and again for days.

In the pictures here we see Base Ten Blocks for units, tens, hundreds and thousands. We wanted to use these block to determine how big larger numbers would be.

If you use ten thousands blocks you have 10,000 units. Like the number ten rod the ten thousand rod would be as high as one thousand block and as long as ten one thousand blocks. Which is the shape shown in chalk.

If you lay out one hundred thousand blocks in a square pattern you would have 100,000 units. Like the hundred units flat this would be as high as a thousand block and as large as one hundred thousand units laid out in a square.

If you were to stack up one thousand thousand blocks in a cube then you wold have 1,000,000.00 units. This would be ten thousand thousand blocks high and then thousand thousand blocks square. It would take up a rather large amount of room.

Here are my helpers behind the 10,000 unit example. The baby enjoyed being outside and eventually fell asleep.

My children here give scale to the 1,000,000.00 units here. The blocks would stack up to just under Hugs' chin and the square would be plenty big enough for four kids to fit inside of.

The first chapter is about the origins of numbers. Maybe I will write up a blog post about that later.

The 2nd chapter is about Pi. I was extra nervous that Pi would be to complicated for my children. They loved learning about Pi, surprising enough. Though they only have a very basic understanding of it. Here are some of the fun things we used to learn Pi. The best was the Learning Upgrade Pi song, my kids are all singing that song now, though they do not know what it all means yet.... We will get to that though.

Some Crafts from our Mesopotamia Unit

We learned how to do hanging weavings, it was a long slow and difficult process. The kids learned a healthy respect for clothing from this project.

In Mesopotamia they would hammer wedge shaped tiles into buildings for decorations. Here we are using golf tees hammered into floral foam. to simulate the the method.

What is your favorite thing about being a MOM? Right now I am loving my little suckling child, attachment parenting, and a chubby happy baby. Over all I love watching children learn, it is very fascinating.

What part of homeschooling your family makes your heart sing? Learning new things myself. Creating things to teach. Seeking the Lords guidance, receiving it, and then seeing confirmation that the guidance was good.

If you could have any dessert right now what would it be? A Nutter Butter Bar. That is because I am looking at an empty box right now. I was so surprised the other day when my daughter read the box and read "Nutty Bars" (by Little Debbie). I had to read it myself to double check she read it right. They will always be Nutter Butter Bars to me, though I have no idea now where that name came from. I think I will plan a trip to the dollar store in todays errands in order to buy more. Oh and throw away the tempting empty box.... Because.. A full box is more tempting and more satisfying. :)

What is one thing about yourself that you’d like to change? Spending mindless idle time at the computer. More time doing (i.e. cleaning, projecting and being more social- away from the computer), less time... planning? thinking? being passive? Whatever it is I am filling that time in with.

What are some talents you’ve been blessed with? I think I am good at understanding children and how they think. I like to bake from 100% whole wheat, garden and make soap. But I don't know I have a particular talent for those things. I like to create things digitally (blogs, images, writing etc), in real life, not so much.

What is a weakness you struggle with? Being overly perfect. I had an amazing ride with the birth of my little 6 week old. My home was perfectly clean, the midwife was perfect, the home birth/ water birth went perfect, my children witnessed it (which was perfect), my husband was perfectly supportive and very complementary, my baby is perfectly happy, I know perfectly what he needs... and then.... Things started to come down from that cloud, it is silly that the lack of perfection is a demotivater to me.

What book has you enjoyed lately? I am LOVING learning about history, specifically Biblical history. I am loving reading these books right now. The Antiquities of the Jews by Flavius Josephus, After the Flood by Bill Cooper, The First 2,000 Years : From Adam to Abraham by Cleon Skousen.

What is something you would like to learn how to do? I wish I had a better head for writing code, like for building webpages or even programs. Many times I have a great idea for a program that would be a wonderful tool to enhance my life, if only I could just build them as I thought of them.

NEA Trying to Limit Homeschooling

B-82. Home Schooling. The National Education Association believes that home schooling programs based on parental choice cannot provide the student with a comprehensive education experience. When home schooling occurs, students enrolled must meet all state curricular requirements, including the taking and passing of assessments to ensure adequate academic progress. Home schooling should be limited to the children of the immediate family, with all expenses being borne by the parents/guardians. Instruction should be by persons who are licensed by the appropriate state education licensure agency, and a curriculum approved by the state department of education should be used.

The Association also believes that home-schooled students should not participate in any extracurricular activities in the public schools.

NEA has clearly shown its self to have a political agenda in the past. These statements are based much more on their political agenda then on the available information on homeschooling.

Scientific studies have demonstrated the superiority of home-based education both socially and academically. For academic reference, the National Home Education Research Institute (http://www.nheri.org) publishes numerous independent research papers on homeschooling by researchers at universities all over the United States. According to one study of over 11,000 homeschool students, academic achievement test scores were above the 80th percentile in all subjects, well above the performance delivered by public schools.

Other studies compared the socialization of homeschooled children using the same conventional socialization tests used to measure social adjustment in public school students. These tests typically evaluate four areas: cooperation, assertiveness, empathy, and self-control. Researchers found that homeschooled children score higher on socialization tests than children attending public or private schools. A technical paper summarizing these studies was published in the technical journal, "Home School Researcher," in 2006 by Richard G. Medlin, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology at Stetson University.

There are many excellent books and publications that provide homeschooling parents with instruction and encouragement. Also, many homeschooling parents belong to local homeschooling parent groups and support organizations.

Dinosaurs and the Bible

Where did the dinosaurs come from? God created the sea creatures and birds on the fifth day of creation. On the sixth day of creation He created the beasts of the earth. Many Christian Scholars believe that the dinosaurs were created on the fifth and sixth days of Creation. Which means men and dinosaurs would have lived on the earth at the same time. The bible describes three creatures that are believed to be dinosaurs

Job 40: 15-18
  15 ¶ Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox.
  16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.
  17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.
  18 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron.

Behemoth -

Bible Dictionary - Apparently the intensive plural of behemah, meaning “beast.” A large river animal (possibly the hippopotamus)
1828 Dictionary - Heb. a beast or brute; from an Arabic vert, which signifies, to shut, to lie hid, to be dumb. In Eth.dumb. Authors are divided in opinion as to the animal intended in scripture by this name; some supposing it to be an ox, others, an elephant; and Bochart labors to prove it the hippopotamus, or river horse. The latter opinion is most probably. [See Hippopotamus.] The original word in Arabic signifies a brute of beast in general, especially a quadruped.
Many Christian Scholars now ask "Does a hippopotamus have a tail like a cedar tree?" The obvious answer is no, hippos have very small tails. But many dinosaurs do indeed have rather large tails as wide and as long as cedar trees

Bible Dictionary - a legendary sea-monster representing the forces of chaos that opposed the Creator.
1828 Dictionary - An aquatic animal, described in Job 41, and mentioned in other passages of Scripture. In Isaiah, it is called the crooked serpent. It is not agreed what animal is intended by the writers, whether the crocodile, the whale, or a species of serpent.

Were there dinosaurs on Noah's Ark? The bible says that all living creatures with breath were brought on to the ark. Many Christian Scholars believe that this would include the dinosaurs.

Gen 7:15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

How could dinosaurs fit on Noah's Ark? Many Christian Scholars believe that Noah would have chosen young animals to carry on his ark. They say that the average size of animal that would have been taken on the ark is about as big as a house cat. If Dinosaurs were taken on the ark as babies, many of them the size of house cats then it is more believable that they could have fit on the ark. Why did the dinosaurs disappear? Many Christian Scholars believe that the Green house effect I talked about in an earlier blog post allowed allot of vegetation to grow that supported the dinosaurs. After the flood the earth was striped of plants and unable to support as much vegetation so the dinosaurs starved. Yet others believe that the ice age was too cold for the dinosaurs.

Gen 1: 6-7 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

Gen 2: 5-6 For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the earth."

There are some Christian Scholars who believe the whole earth was surrounded by a large cloud or blanket of vapor, like a green house before the flood. If this was the case the the whole earth would have been more warm and moist. Maybe these warm moist conditions would explain why animals and plants grew larger and why people lived longer.

Gen 7:11 "on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened."

Some Christian Scholars believe that earthquake's and volcanic upheavals would have occurred in order to break up the fountains of the great deep. Some scholars also believe that the earth being covered with water plus volcanic ash in the air may cooled the earth and brought on the Ice Age after the flood.

Some Christian Scholars also believe that the earth did not experience seasons before the flood because of the green house effect. So the polar ice caps would have began to freeze for the first time. This pluss the excess water also may have caused an ice age.

Gen. 10: 25 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan.

During the ice age time the waters in the oceans would have been lower because of the volume of water that was frozen in the polar ice caps. With lower oceans it is believed that continents would be connected by land bridges thus making it one land. When the Polar ice caps melted the oceans would have filled up and the land would become divided.

So Papa is home and we are doing homeschool. He interrupts scripture reading to start a long discussion about how learning to read the scriptures is really learning philosophy, culture and formal communication. And about what each of those means and the importance of them, and how most others only learn that in college... Then we finish scripture reading and Papa comes in excited because he caught a praying mantis. Now the kids are all huddled around a jar instead of spelling worksheets which is what I planned next... and I had to take a minuet and remind myself I am glad to have Papa's input and that is better then my plan for today's homeschool lesson.. lol

Dressing up as Royalty from Ancient Mesopotamia

I purchased this book. Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors: An Activity Guide by Marian Broida. We started learning about Mesopotamia today. The dress up ideas in the book were very easy to follow so all the kids got involved and enjoyed making their crowns and wraping their clothes.

The clothing is simply wrapped around the kids with the extra cloth draped over one shoulder. Men would wear the drape on the right and women would wear it on the left.

The ladies crowns have leaves dangling in the front and flowers standing straight up in the back. The were made of metal, silver and gold.

This crown style was first worn by an Assyrian Queen. It was a replica of the walls of Assyria. This crown design was since used in Greece and Europe. But the design originated from copying the Assyrian walls.

The Origin of Heathen Religions

Introduction

As our homeschool studies history and ancient civilizations we plan to study allot of the literature, legends and stories of the civilizations. I wanted to keep stories and legends from other religions in perspective. While reading through Cleon Skousen's book The First Two Thousand Years in chapter 23 and 24 I found the answers I needed. Now as we read the legends and religious stories we will evaluate them against the elements of a heathen religion, compare them, and see how many elements each story has.

The Origin of Heathen Religions

“Modern revelation has confirmed the declaration of ancient prophets that ethics, religion and the related philosophical concepts growing out of them all came by direct revelation from God in the earliest times. Authoritative sources now available to us also indicate that heathen religions and heathen philosophies came later as diluted substitutes designed to satisfy the people who felt disinclined to subscribe to the ideals and standards of conduct revealed from God.” Cleon Skousen The First Two Thousand Years (F2KY) page p200

Nimrod set up the first heathen religion in the post flood world.

“And it came to pass that many journeyed from the east and as they journeyed from the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and dwelt ther in the plain of Shinar. And they said one to another, come, go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and they had slime [asphalt] for mortar And they said, Come, go to, let us build a city, and a tower whose top will be high, nigh unto heaven; and let us make us a name least we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.” Joseph Smith Translation Genesis 11: 1-3

The Historian Josephus described Nimrod. The brackets below are included from Cleon Skousen.

“Now it was Nimrod who excited them [the people of Shinar] to such an affront and contempt of God. He was the grandson of Ham, the son of Noah, a bold man, and of great strength of hand. He persuaded them not to ascribe it [their prosperity] to God, as if it was through his means they were happy, but to believe that it was their own courage which procured that happiness. He also changed the government into tyranny, seeing no other way of turning man from the fear of God, but to bring them into a constant dependence on his power. He also said he would be revenged of God, if he should have a mind to drown the world again; for that we should build a tower too high for the waters to be able to reach and that he would avenge himself on God for destroying their forefathers.”

“Now the multitude were very ready to follow the determination of Nimrod, and to esteem it as a piece of cowardice to submit to God; and they built a tower, neither sparing any pains, nor being in any degree negligent about the work; and, by reason of the multitude of hands employed in it, it grew very high, sooner then anyone could expect; but the thickness of it was so great, and it was so strongly built, that thereby its great height seemed, upon view, to be less than it really was. It was built of burnt brick, cemented together with mortar, made of bitumen, that it might not be liable to admit water.”

Elements of the Heathen Religion Nimrod set up, and the structure that other heathen religions followed.

To place man above God. “Josephus states that he [Nimrod] belittled God and tried to destroy men's confidence in God. He did not deny his existence. He just said God wasn't important. He said men were their own benefactors and didn't need to thank God for the prosperity which they had worked so hard themselves to acquire.” Cleon Skousen, F2KY page 195
“The next step is to worship great conquerors such as Nimrod and call them gods. This is exactly what Nimrod undertook to do. As the historian [Josephus] says. 'And not all this sufficed unto Nimrod's evil desire. Not enough that he turned men away from God, he did all he could to make them pay divine honors unto himself. He set himself up as a god, and made a seat for himself in the imitation of the seat of God. It was a tower built of a round rock, and on it he placed a throne of cedar wood, upon which arose, one above the other, four thrones, of iron, copper silver and gold. Crowning all, upon the golden throne, lay a precious stone, round in shape and gigantic in size. This served him as a seat and as he sat upon it, all nations came and paid him divine homage.' ” Cleon Skousen F2KY page 195
“The next thing... was the elevating of animals above humanity... Heathen religions delivered human begins over the real or fancied whims of animals. In many cases animal life was made more sacred than human life, and humans were sacrificed to animal gods. The curse of animal worship and false philosophy associated with it survive to this day among large segments of humanity.” Cleon Skousen F2KY page 195
Next is “the idea that human beings are somehow influenced in their daily actions by the sun, moon and stars. These astronomical bodies were credited with the power to bestow special gifts, talents, tendencies and qualities of personality upon each person... This destroyed the concept of “free agency” and “will”. What ever a person did he could always excuse himself by blaming it on the stars. As Jeremiah declared in his day: 'thus saith the Lord, learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.' Jeremiah 10:2 ” Cleon Skousen F2KY 196
The heathen religions put sins into their rituals. So the more a person was devoted to the false religion the more ritual sining they would have to do. “Heathen ritual was frequently devoted to almost exclusively to the stimulating and satisfying of human passion. The words adultery and idolatry both came from the same derivation. The heathen religions institutionalized immorality... This included the sacrifice of human beings by burning or slaughter.” Cleon Skousen F2KY 196-197

Important points to know in regards to Heathen Religions or Institutes

“Heathen religions did not evolve they were promoted. They were not the outgrowth of man's instinctive desire to worship but the outgrowth of mans instinctive desire to grasp for power. Nimrod conceived of his man-made institutes as a tool to alienate the loyalty of mankind from their Creator and his priesthood and attach it to himself” Clean Skousen F2KY p199
“Heathen institutes were set up to destroy true religion which had been revealed by God through direct revelation.” Cleon Skousen F2KY page p199
“Idolatrous practices did not come into existence until long after true religion had been revealed from heaven.” Cleon Skousen F2KY page p199
“Heathen worship was set up by defiant and rebellious men to compete against true religion As Nimrod had declared 'Depart from the religion of Shem and cleave to the institutes of Nimrod.'” Cleon Skousen F2KY page p199
“These abominations were originally germinated in the sophisticated intellects of the apostate men who lived when the gospel was on the earth...Heathen philosophy was brewed in the dark minds of men who had apostatized from the truth and had set about to destroy the gospel and the influence of the priesthood by any means they could think of. “Cleon Skousen F2KY page p 200
“Their technique consisted primarily in taking concepts which the people already believed and then rationalizing and twisting them so that they might become more appealing to the common man by making allowances for vices and indulgences which true religion forbade.” Cleon Skousen F2KY page p200
“Revealed religion is the original source for most of the ethical and philosophical knowledge generally attributed to the intellectual leaders of heathen nations.” Cleon Skousen F2KY page p200
Studies have been made which show that all of those basic ethics and philosophical beliefs which have been found in one form or another among nearly every people of the hearth have common origin. “You will observe that the scriptural material now available to us repudiates the interpretation of many modern historians who have tried to determined the origin of religious philosophy and religious practices. The majority have concluded that religious understanding and religious expression “evolved.” They feel that heathen religions are merely a primitive means of expressing the “instinctive desire to worship.” They look upon idolatry and its attendant rituals as just part of the 'upward reach of man.' they seek to excuse the cruelty, immorality and barbarism of heathen worship on the grounds that it was the best their primitive mentalities were capable of producing... “

“It was for this very reason that God warned his modern servants against pseudo-scholarship – where men are ever learning but never coming to the knowledge of the truth. The Lord knew that whole libraries have been loaded with misinformation and therefore he said: 'Harken ye elders of my church, whom I have appointed. I found a wonderful book at the DI

CBOBS - The Child's Own Book Of Bible Stories

This book tells the stories of the bible in a wonderful story format. Because I know that as a LDS reader I will understand the stories differently I am going through and pre-reading all of the stories with a pencil in hand. As I need to I cross out parts and add in parts. I find that the editing I need to do is very little but important. Story Three "The Tower that was never finished" is a perfect set up to jump right into reading The Story of The World. It talks about nomads and people settling between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Which are the beginning stories in the story of the world. So I am very happy with this combination and will read these two together back to back.

I am going to use these two books together.
SOTW - The Story of the World

I found this wonderful book that tells history in story fashion. It is highly rated among Christian Homeschoolers. We have had so much success with family reading time that I wanted something that took a broad look at history in a story version. I am very happy with this book.

How Big Was the Ark?

The ark was 450 feet (137 m) long, 75 feet (23m) wide, and 45 feet (14m) tall. That's almost twice as long as the Salt Lake Tabernacle but not quite as tall. It would take about 300 children stretching out their arms and touching their fingertips to make a ring of children standing all the way around it. From the Children's Friend.

5 And a book of remembrance was kept, in the which was recorded, in the language of Adam, for it was given unto as many as called upon God to write by the spirit of inspiration;

From The Pearl of Great Price Student Manuel: The Generations of Adam it says,

“In the beginning God gave Adam a language that was pure, perfect, and undefiled. This Adamic language , now unknown, was far superior to any tongue which is presently extant. For instance, the name of God the Father, in this original language, is Man of Holiness , signifying that he is a Holy Man and not a vague spiritual essence." Elder Bruce R. McConkie ( Moses 6:57 .)

“This first language spoken by mortals was either the celestial tongue of the Gods or such adaptation of it as was necessary to meet the limitations of mortality; and Adam and his posterity had power to speak, read, and write it” ( Mormon Doctrine, 19).

Elder McConkie said: “From the beginning, the Lord provided a language and gave men the power to read and write. . . . The thing which they first wrote, and which of all their writings was of the most worth unto them, was a Book of Remembrance, a book in which they recorded what the Lord had revealed about himself, about his coming, and about the plan of salvation. " ( The Promised Messiah, 86; see also Moses 6:46 ).

We do not know what Adams written language was like, in our days no one is known of yet to have seen Adams Book of Remembrance. The Lord protected the Book of Mormon in a stone box. It maybe that the Lord has protected Adam's Book of Remembrance. It may bee that someday people on earth will be able to read from Adams writings.

There has been discovered in archeology artifacts with written language on them. When written language is discovered it is part of written history, any time before the discovery of written language in archeology is considered prehistory.

The earliest written language that has been discovered yet was found in Mesopotamia written in the Sumerian language using Cuneiform writing it was made about 3200 BC. The Kish tablet was found in Mesopotaia and may be the earliest form of writing ever discovered.

The writing on the Kish tablet is still considered proto-writing. Which uses simple pictures to communicate rather then the more advanced writing that uses symbols. Examples of Sumerian written language have also been found with more symbolic writing.

This Sumerian Cuneiform tablet uses symbols and is a more advanced form of written language.

Keeping a Book of Remembrance

“Keeping journals reminds us of blessings. Those who keep a book of remembrance are more likely to keep the Lord in remembrance in their daily lives. Journals are a way of counting our blessings and of leaving an inventory of these blessings for our posterity” (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed. Edward L. Kimball [1982], 349).

Just like Adam we can keep a Book of Remembrance. This written history can be a reminder to us of the blessings and inspiration the Lord as given us. It can also be a personal history of the stories of our lives. As you grow up you will enjoy reviewing your journal entries and remembering the stories in them. Your children and your ancestors also will treasure your Book of Remembrance, just like you, they will enjoy hearing stories about their ancestors.

Genesis 4:

20 And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
21 And his brother’s name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
22 And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

From these short passages we learn allot about how Cain's descendants lived.

Cains Descendants:

dwelt in tents
owned cattle
played the harp
played the organ
worked with brass
worked with iron

Lets learn what these words mean. The below definitions come from the 1828 Dictionary.

1. tent - A pavilion or portable lodge consisting of canvas or other coarse cloth, stretched and sustained by poles; used for sheltering persons from the weather.

The tents Cain's descendants lived in might have looked like this one from the Bible Times Center. It would have been a simple structure used to protect his family from the weather.

2. cattle - Beasts or quadrupeds in general, serving for tillage, or other labor, and for food to man. In its primary sense, the word includes camels, horses, asses, all the varieties of domesticated horned beasts or the bovine genus, sheep of all kinds and goats, and perhaps swine. In this general sense, it is constantly used in the scriptures.

Today we use the word livestock. Our livestock is much different then the animals would have been for Cain and his descendants. Our animals have been domesticated for a long time, for years and years we have been breeding them to be larger and more productive. Most likely Cains Descendants had smaller more rugged animals to help them and use for food.

3. harp - An instrument of music of the stringed kind, of a triangular figure, held upright and commonly touched with the fingers.

Harps today are very expensive and fancy. The first harps that have been found in archaeological prehistory, other then the bible, are in egyptian history. The above photos are examples of egytpian harps.

4. organ - The largest and most harmonious of wind instruments of music, consisting of pipes which are filled with wind, and stops touched by the fingers. It is blown by a bellows.

The first organ in archaeological prehistory, other then the bible, is the Hydraulis, which is from ancient Greece. Ctesibius of Alexandrea, who lived about B.C 200 is generally credited with building the first pipe organ. Panpipes like the one shown on the right are believed to be the predecessors of the pipe organ. Today when we watch general conference we see see the conference center organ.in the background. The organ is a beautiful instrument and is the preferred instrument for sacrament hymns.

5. brass - Hebrew bronze, brass, or copper. (from the Bible dictionary) An alloy of copper and zink,of a yellow color; usually containing about one third of its weight of zink, but the proportions are variable. (from the 1828 dictionary)

In archaeological prehistory, other then the bible, brass is seen in West India, Uzbekistan, Iran, Syria, Iraq and Israel. During what is known as the bronze age. Which started around 3300 BC. Bronze was used to make weapons, dishes, ornaments, armor, drums and other various items.

6. iron - A metal, the hardest, most common and most useful of all the metals.

In archaeological prehistory, other then the bible, the iron age started around 1300 BC. I was used to make tools, weapons, armor, bells, ornaments and other various items.

Times and Seasons Unit 2 - Telling time

A day is 24 hours long. It takes our side of the earth 24 hours to make one full rotation and then rotate to face the sun again. Each time our earth faces the sun we have day time. It takes 24 hours for each day to complete.

When we learned about the creation it took seven days of creation to make the earth. In the scripture story it says that "Jesus made the earth in six days. The days were much longer than our days." In Abraham 3: 4 we read. "one revolution was a day unto the Lord, after his manner of reckoning, it being one thousand years according to the time appointed unto that whereon thou standest." This means that one of the Lords days is 1000 years long compared to our days. When you think of how long the creation days could have been, you can see that the Lord had allot of time to make such glorious things. A sundial is like a clock. Since there are 24 hours in a day, a sundial could end up having as many as 24 rocks. A long time ago people would use sundials like clocks. They would place the first rock when the first lights of the sun hit the dial. They would place the last rock when the last lights of the day hit the sundial. The would place the middle rock at high noon. Then they would divide the space between the first and last rock into 12 equal spaces. Thus the daytime was divided into 12 parts. They would do this again at night, and divide the night into 12 parts. Because the length of the days and of the nights changes as the year passes the time it took for the sun to move from one marker would vary depending on what time of day it was. When the days were longer and the nights were shorter the distance between the rocks in the daytime were greater, and smaller in the night.

Now a days we have mechanical clocks, this means we can divide the day into 24 exactly equal parts. We still have our clock divided into two sets of 12, but the length of the day and length of the night do not change how long the divides are. An hour is always 60 Min's long which is always 60 seconds long.

Here you see a 24 hour wall clock, this is what it would look like if our clocks counted up to 24 instead of counting to 12 twice.

Most clocks you see will be the standard 12 hour clock you see here. Looking at the face of the clock you will see that it has three hands on it. The shortest hand tells us what hour it is. The next hand on the clock gets a little bit longer so we can more closely see where it is pointing, this medium size hand tells us what minute it is in the hour. The final hand, usually the thinnest, fastest, longest hand is the tells us what second of the minute it is. As each hand gets longer it is pointing to a smaller amount of time. It is longer so we can see closer and more accurately where it is pointing.

The shadow your stick casts is like the short hand on the clock. It tells you what hour it is. The minute hand can not be made by the sun. The minute hand tells you how much of the hour has passed. It goes around the clock in one hour, when it is half way around the hour is half way over. When it has made it all the way around and back up to the top one hour is done and a new hour is beginning.

A sundial is used to watch the shadow pattern that the sun casts.

To start out with we need a stick. Find a small stick. This stick needs to be standing up so we can watch its shadow.
You can get the stick to stand up by pressing a ball of playdough around its base and then pressing it against the ground. Or you could put some dirt or sand in a paper cup and use the cup to help it stand.
Once your stick is standing you will see its shadow. Since the shadow of the stick is always falls opposite the sun, the shadow will move slowly as the sun slowly moves through the sky.
Now set an alarm for the next hour mark comming up on your clock. When the alarm goes off run outside and see where the shadow is. Place a rock at the end of the sticks shadow.
Set the alarm again, for another hour away. Repeat this activity until you have all the hours you want marked on your sundial.

Lets play the sundial game, where you will pretend you are parts of the sundial. You will need.

1 person who represents the sticks shadow
1 person or chair that represents the stick

To Play. The "shadow" always hides behind the stick away from the sun. Or the "shadow" always keeps the stick between him and the sun.

The "sun" walks slowly in a circle or half circle around the "stick"
The "stick" stands still.
The shadow watches the sun move and also moves so that the stick is always between the sun and him. The shadow can either stand behind the stick. Or the shadow can lay down on the ground and roll, slither, or move around the base of the stick as the sun moves around the stick. Always trying to stay in line with the stick and the sun.

In this game you can act out quickly what will happen with your sundial over the long time of the day. You can see how the shadow will move.

O'Clock. As mentioned before the minute hand goes around the clock to tell you how much of the hour has passed. When the minute hand is pointing stright up at the 12 this means one hour has just ended and a new is just beginning. We call this time "o'clock". When telling the time, the first part of the time is determined by the hour hand. Look at the hour hand and see what time it is pointing to on the clock. That tells you what hour it is. If both hands are pointing to the 12 then we say it is twelve o'clock. We write 12 o'clock with numbers like this 12:00. This means it is the 12th hour and 00 minutes of the hour have passed by.

If the short hand is pointing at 10 and the long hand is still pointing at the 12 we say it is eleven o'clock. We write 10 o'clock like this 11:00 This means that it is the 10th hour and 00 minutes of the hour have passed by.

Again if the short hand is pointing at the 9 and the long hand is pointing at the 12, then we say it is 9 o'clock.

Lets play a domino time game. In this game you will match the face of the clock to the written digital time .

Print out each of these pages. Domino set 1, Domino set 2, Domino set 3, Domino set 4.
Cut around the outside of the dark black lines, but not the thin black lines.
Now you can play dominoes. Connect the matching digital time to the matching clock face to make a chain of dominoes.

To transgress a divine law, is sin. To offend by violating a law; to sin.
TRANSGRES'SION, The act of passing over or beyond any law or rule of moral duty; the violation of a law or known principle of rectitude; breach of command. - "He mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away." Ezra 10.

1. Believe -

Gen. 1: 14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

The sun, moon and stars all are signs of time moving. As we watch them move and change we can see the progression of time. Lets learn more about the sun and how it helps us establish time.

The Earth is rotating all the time. If you drew an imagionary line through the center of the earths rotation, that would be the axis.

It takes the earth almost 24 hours to rotate once on its axis. As the earth rotates parts of the earth are closer to the sun then the others. The part of the earth that is closest to the sun is lit up by the sun, making it daytime in that area. The part of the earth that is farther from the sun is darker, making it night time there.

Try this experiment. Find a globe or a ball. Practice helping this ball rotate on its axis. Now put this ball near a source of light. See how one side of the ball is lighter then the other. When you rotate the ball the part of the ball that is light changes. This is how we get day and night.

The sun tells us what time it is. As the Earth spins on the axis the sun appears to move in the sky. For the most part the sun stays in the same place, infact it is the Earth's movement that makes the sun appear tomove. In the morning the sun starts out low in the sky in the east. As the earth rotates the sun appears to slowly rise up higher into the sky. By noon the sun is high in the sky, making that the brightest part of the day. In the afternoon the sun starts slowly falling lower in the sky.

In the evening we can have lovely sunsets as the suns light is low in the sky. When the sun moves through the sky it helps us see time move also.

At night the moon comes out and travels through the sky like the sun. The stars can been seen sparkling at night also. The moon and the stars give us a little bit of light at night to see by.

The sun sets our rhythm of the day. When it is light outside we are awake and using its light to work and do good. When it is dark outside we sleep while our bodies grow and recharge. The scriptures instruct us to follow this pattern.

D&C 88: 124 retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated.

The sun makes shadows. When the sun shines on an object it lights that object up. Because the light is hitting the object and not the ground it can cause a shadow, the shadow is generally in the shape of the object. The shadow will change depending on the position the sun is at in the sky. Watching the position of the shadows can be another way to tell the time of the day. A fun way to watch the way shadows change is to make a sundial. Follow this link below to create a sundial as a science project.
